When Childhood Trauma Resurfaces: Revisiting the Past

When Childhood Trauma Resurfaces

Childhood trauma is not a closed chapter; its impact can endure, and at times, resurface unexpectedly. When trauma resurfaces, it can evoke intense emotions and memories from the past.

A person with long curly hair looks down and sad as she hugs herself.

In this blog post, we will explore the common triggers and experiences that cause trauma to resurface, the emotional and psychological responses that may follow, and how individuals can navigate these challenging moments on their path towards healing and self-discovery.

1. Triggers and Unexpected Reminders:

Childhood trauma can resurface due to triggers—events, situations, or sensory cues reminiscent of the traumatic experience. Triggers may include certain sounds, smells, specific places, or interactions with people who resemble individuals from the past.

2. Emotional Responses:

When trauma resurfaces, it can evoke a range of emotional responses. Survivors may experience intense fear, anxiety, anger, sadness, or a sense of dissociation. These emotional reactions can be overwhelming, leading to a feeling of being out of control. When these emotional responses are intense and feel “outsized” they can be Emotional Flashbacks.

3. Flashbacks and Intrusive Memories:

Resurfaced trauma can manifest as flashbacks or intrusive memories, where the traumatic event replays in the survivor’s mind as if it were happening in the present. These distressing experiences can be disorienting and reawaken the emotional pain of the past. Flashbacks can come in the form of feeling like emotionally or physically you are back in the time of the traumatic events, or it is “happening all over again” or even more subtly when our emotional reactions are more based on the past then they are the current situation. Here is more information on understanding flashbacks.

4. Impact on Relationships:

The resurgence of childhood trauma can impact interpersonal relationships. Survivors may withdraw or become more reactive in their interactions, finding it difficult to communicate their feelings to loved ones. This can lead to misunderstandings and strain on relationships. Survivors can also subconsciously  attempt to replay trauma dynamics from their past in their current relationships, such as gravitating towards emotionally unavailable when they have a history of caregivers who were emotionally unavailable.

5. Coping Strategies and Self-Care:

When trauma resurfaces, it is crucial for survivors to have healthy coping strategies at their disposal. Engaging in self-care practices, such as mindfulness, grounding techniques, or seeking support from friends, family, or professionals, can help navigate the emotional turbulence.

6. Revisiting the Past as a Path to Healing:

While resurfaced trauma can be distressing, it can also present an opportunity for healing. Acknowledging and processing the resurfaced emotions can lead to a deeper understanding of the trauma’s impact on one’s life and provide an opening for therapeutic work.

7. Seeking Professional Support:

Professional support, such as trauma-informed therapy, can be invaluable when childhood trauma resurfaces. A therapist can help survivors navigate the emotions, memories, and triggers in a safe and supportive environment, facilitating the healing process.

Childhood trauma is not a closed chapter, and its resurfacing can be a challenging experience. Triggers, emotional responses, and intrusive memories may accompany the resurgence of trauma. However, when childhood trauma resurfaces, it can also be an opportunity for growth and healing. By engaging in healthy coping strategies, seeking professional support, and being compassionate with themselves, survivors can navigate these difficult moments and continue their journey towards healing and reclaiming their lives.
